Do Presidential Pets Make History?
Believe it or not, some elections have been
thought to hinge more on a candidate's
relationship with animals rather than their
political views. Now, while that may seem a bit
of an exaggeration, some experts feel that
Franklin Delano Roosevelt was re-elected to
his fourth term due to his "Fala Speech". FDR
was forced to defend his decision to send a
Navy destroyer to retrieve his Scottish Terrier
who was inadvertently left on the Aleutian
Islands. Republicans were causing an uproar
regarding the decision and FDR defended his
choice in the famous speech. Americans
loved the fact that he cared for his beloved
pet, and that speech was credited with
helping with his re-election.
It is also rumored that Richard Nixon was in
danger of getting booted off Dwight D.
Eisenhower's ticket as a vice presidential
candidate until he gave the "Checkers
Speech" where he spoke warmly of his
Cocker Spaniel.
The most popular presidential pets are dogs and horses. There have been presidents
which a large menagerie of pets to presidents with quite unusual choices.
Abraham Lincoln had cats, dogs, goats, ponies, pigs, and rabbits. The White House
tradition of sparing a turkey at Thanksgiving was created by Lincoln.
Calvin Coolidge loved dogs. He had a terrier, an Airedale, a bulldog, a Shetland
Sheepdog, a "police dog", 2 Chows, and 3 collies. He also had canaries, a thrush, and
a mockingbird, Enoch the goose, Ebenezer the donkey, 2 cats, one bobcat, and 2
raccoons. He also kept lion cubs, a wallaby, a pigmy hippo, and a bear.
Theodore Roosevelt wins the "Holy Cow!" award with 12 horses, 5 dogs, 5 guinea
pigs, 2 cats, garter snakes, a horned toad, a pony, 2 kangaroo rats, a flock of ducks, a
flying squirrel, a badger, a pig, and a macaw named Eli Yale. And those were not the
most unusual ones: he also had a lion, hyena, wildcat, coyote, 5 bears, 2 parrots, a
zebra, a barn owl, lizards, rats, roosters, and raccoons.
James Buchanan had elephants that were a gift from the king of Siam.
JFK was rumored to relieve stress by visiting an animal farm on the White House
grounds that contained lambs, ponies, dogs, hamsters, guinea pigs, parakeets, a
canary, a cat, a rabbit, a horse and Pushinka, the puppy of a Soviet space dog.
All exotic animals were usually sent to the National Zoo or other zoos around the
country. There is a Presidential Pet Museum in Williamsburg, Va. dedicated to all the
White House pets.

There was also intense media coverage when President Obama was deciding which
breed of dog he was going to buy his daughters. The demand for Portuguese Water
Dogs increased dramatically after his infamous choice. The outcry of not choosing a
mixed-breed dog also allowed the Humane Society and the SPCA to encourage
adoption in a different light.
